Fatbike rules in the Netherlands: what is allowed and what is not?

By the Sache Bikes workshop · updated 17-10-2026

You see fatbikes everywhere in the Netherlands. To simply use one as a bicycle on the road, without a license plate and insurance, your fatbike must meet a number of rules. These are the most important points.

When is a fatbike a bicycle with pedal assistance?

An electric fatbike is considered a bicycle with pedal assistance in the Netherlands (and therefore not a moped) if:

  • the motor has a maximum rated power of 250 W;
  • the motor only assists when you pedal;
  • the assistance decreases and stops at 25 km/h, or earlier if you stop pedaling.

If your fatbike meets these requirements, you do not need a license plate, insurance sticker, driver's license or helmet, and you can simply ride on the bicycle path.

And the throttle?

A throttle may only provide walking or starting assistance up to 6 km/h. If you can ride faster than 6 km/h with the throttle without pedaling, your fatbike is no longer a bicycle by law, but a moped. In that case, moped rules apply: a license plate, third-party liability insurance and (depending on the type) a helmet and an AM driver's license. A fatbike without type approval cannot be issued a license plate and therefore cannot be used on public roads.

Modifications to the bicycle

Modifying the speed limiter, installing a more powerful controller or a motor with more than 250 W makes your bicycle a moped. In addition to the risk of a fine and seizure, the warranty will also be voided, and your insurance may cause problems in the event of damage. Therefore, when replacing an electric component, always choose a component that fits your model. We do not sell components designed to bypass the 25 km/h limit. You can find everything in our fatbike parts.

Lighting and reflectors

In the dark and in low visibility, lighting is mandatory: a white or yellow light at the front and a red light at the rear. Your bicycle must also have reflectors, such as a red reflector at the rear and reflectors on the pedals and wheels. Read how to choose the right headlight and taillight as well.

Someone on the back

You may carry someone on the back if there is a suitable seat. Children under 5 years old may only ride along in a child seat with footrests.

Safely on the road

Good lighting, strong brakes and tires in good condition are important, especially in autumn and winter. Also protect your bicycle against theft with a good lock: view our locks.

This article is a summary and does not constitute legal advice. There is political discussion about additional rules for fatbikes, such as a minimum age and a helmet requirement. Therefore, always check the current rules on the website of the Dutch government.
