Fatbike through your employer: bike plan, lease and WKR
A fatbike through your employer can make a big difference. There are a few ways: a company bike, a leased bike, or your employer buys the bike and processes it through the employee benefits scheme. Read below to find out how it works and what Sache Bikes arranges for you and your employer.
The 3 most commonly used schemes
1. Company bike (business lease)
Your employer leases or buys the fatbike and makes it available to you. You can also use it privately. For this, you pay a 7% benefit-in-kind tax on the recommended retail price per year. For a fatbike costing €1,800, that is €126 per year in additional income on which you pay tax; this costs you approximately €4 to €6 per month net. Maintenance and insurance are often included in the lease agreement.
2. Bike plan through the employee benefits scheme (WKR)
Your employer buys the bike and provides it to you tax-free through the non-taxable margin of the employee benefits scheme. In 2026, this margin is 2% of the total wage bill up to €400,000 and 1.18% on the portion above that. You often pay a part yourself, for example by using annual leave hours or your year-end bonus. It is up to your employer to decide whether and how this can be done.
3. Private lease or buy yourself and claim mileage
If you buy the fatbike yourself, your employer may give you a non-taxable travel allowance of up to €0.23 per kilometer for business kilometers and commuting. If you cycle 15 km to work every day, that adds up quickly.
Self-employed or freelancer?
If you use the fatbike for business, you can purchase it as a business asset and claim back the VAT in proportion to its business use. We provide an invoice in the name of your company with a VAT number.

Frequently asked questions
Can a fatbike be part of a bike plan?
Yes, as long as it is an electric bike that meets the rules: pedal assistance up to 25 km/h and a maximum of 250 watts. All our fatbikes are set up this way.
What if my employer doesn't have a bike plan?
Just ask. Many employers have room in the WKR and consider it a good way to encourage cycling to work. We can help with a quote that you can forward.
Can I also pay in installments?
Yes. If you buy it yourself, you can pay in 3 installments with in3 or pay later with Klarna.
Please note: this is general information and not tax advice. Rules and amounts may change, and the exact application depends on your employer. Check the details with your employer, your accountant, or the Tax and Customs Administration. Amounts checked on October 6, 2026.
