Measure first, replace later

The controller powers the motor based on signals from the pedal sensor, throttle, brake sensors and display. If one of these components or a connector between them fails, it may seem as though the controller is faulty. We want to avoid installing a new €150 controller when the problem is actually a €25 brake sensor. That is why we first measure the battery voltage, the connections in the wiring harness and the sensors. We only replace the controller if it is genuinely the cause.

Do you recognize these symptoms?

  • The display turns on, but the motor provides no assistance and the throttle does nothing.
  • The bike jerks or the assistance cuts out and then returns, even on flat ground.
  • The display shows an error code related to communication with the controller or motor. First check the display connector, wiring harness, pedal sensor and pedal sensor extension cable. Only then could the display or controller be the cause.
  • The bike does not turn on at all, even though the battery is charged.
  • After rain or pressure washing, the assistance no longer works.
  • You smell burning or see discoloured connectors at the controller.

How the repair works

  1. You register your bike via the appointment page or WhatsApp and describe the problem.
  2. We read the error message and test the battery, cables, sensors and controller.
  3. You will be informed of the cause and the price. We will only proceed with your approval.
  4. We install an original, suitable controller and connect all connectors securely to prevent water ingress.
  5. The display is set to the legal 25 km/h limit, and we test the assistance, throttle for walking assistance up to 6 km/h and brake sensors.
  6. You pick up the bike or we carry out the repair at your home.

Why a controller fails

The most common cause is moisture. A controller is often located low on the frame or in a battery compartment, where it can be exposed to splashing water and dirt. Therefore, pressure washing your bike with a high-pressure cleaner is not a good idea. Loose or oxidised connectors can also put a heavy strain on the controller, as can a short circuit in a damaged cable. An original controller is matched to your bike's motor and display; an unsuitable model often causes the display or assistance to malfunction. You can also buy controllers separately in the controller collection, but if you are unsure, leave the installation to us. You can find more common faults on fatbike faults.

Frequently asked questions

How can I be sure that my controller is faulty?

You usually cannot tell by looking at the outside. Symptoms such as no assistance, jerking or an error code can also be caused by a sensor, connector or battery. The diagnosis (€30, waived if repaired) will give you certainty.

Can my controller be repaired instead of replaced?

We replace a faulty controller with an original, suitable one. This ensures that it works properly with your motor and display.

Is a new controller faster?

No. After installation, the assistance will be set to the legal 25 km/h limit and the throttle will only work for walking assistance up to 6 km/h, as required by fatbike regulations.

My fatbike stopped working after a rain shower. Is it the controller?

It could be, but moisture in a connector or the display is often the cause. We will test this first so that you do not pay for a controller unnecessarily.

Do you have a controller for my brand?

We almost always have controllers in stock for common fatbike brands such as Ouxi, Qmwheel, 7GO, RSE, AGM, Windgoo and Koolux.

What if the wiring harness is also damaged?

We will inform you of this first. Replacing a wiring harness costs €125 and can take 1–2 business days.
