Fatbike creaks when pedaling or rattles: causes and solutions

By the Sache Bikes workshop · updated 17-10-2026

If your fatbike creaks when you pedal, the cause is usually the pedals, the crank or the bottom bracket, sometimes a dry chain or the saddle. If it rattles over bumps, something is often loose: the chain guard, the battery in the holder, a mudguard, the stand or a bolt. Pinpoint the sound and tighten loose parts; if it persists, have it repaired in The Hague or Zoetermeer, often the same day.

In short

  • Creaks only when you pedal: pedals, crank, bottom bracket or chain.
  • Creaks whether you ride standing or sitting without pedaling: saddle, seat post, handlebars or front fork.
  • Rattles over bumps: loose chain guard, battery, mudguard, luggage rack, stand, light or bolt.
  • Sound from the wheel or motor: wheel bearing with play or a motor problem, have this checked.
  • Pedals €25, crankset €50, bottom bracket €70, wheel bearing €60, chain guard €50; complete check in Gold maintenance (€85).

A fatbike is heavy and often rides over cobblestones and curbs. As a result, bolts come loose more quickly and bearings wear out. A sound is usually harmless, but sometimes it is a warning: a loose crank or a wheel with play can cause further damage or become unsafe if you continue riding.

Most common causes

Pedals

A creak with every pedal stroke surprisingly often comes from the pedals. The thread in the crank can be dry or loose, or the bearing in the pedal itself is worn. Replace a pedal that has play or turns stiffly.

Loose or worn crank

If the crank arm is not properly secured to the axle, it creaks or clicks when you apply force, often on one side. If you continue riding with it, the connection will wear out and the crank may eventually come loose. Tightening it to the correct torque or replacing the crankset solves this.

Bottom bracket (bracket)

A worn bottom bracket bearing makes a creaking, grinding or clicking sound and sometimes has play when you move the cranks sideways. Moisture and dirt accelerate wear. Replacement is then the solution.

Dry or worn chain

A dry or rusty chain creaks and squeaks when you pedal. Clean it and lubricate it; if the sound persists, the chain may be worn or have a stiff link.

Saddle, seat post and handlebars

Creaking that you mainly hear when you move on the saddle or pull on the handlebars often comes from the seat post in the frame, the saddle clamp, the handlebar stem or the headset. A handlebar riser that is not properly secured can also creak.

Rattling: something is loose

Rattling over bumps almost always means something is not properly secured: a chain guard with loose screws, a mudguard, the luggage rack, the side stand, the headlight or a reflector. A battery with play in the holder also rattles, and it can also cause the bike to cut out; read fatbike cuts out.

Wheel bearing or motor

If you hear a rattling, grinding or clicking sound from the wheel itself, or feel play when you move the wheel sideways, a wheel bearing may be worn. If the sound comes from the motor hub, read fatbike motor makes sound.

Check yourself: step by step

  1. Turn off the bike. Ride for a bit and pay attention to when the sound occurs: only when pedaling, over bumps, when steering or when braking.
  2. Hold both crank arms and move them sideways. If you feel play or hear a click, the crank or bottom bracket is not properly secured.
  3. Turn the pedals by hand on the axle. If they turn stiffly or have play, the pedals are worn.
  4. Lift the bike up a bit and bounce it on the tires. Listen for anything rattling and feel the chain guard, mudguards, luggage rack, stand, lights and battery.
  5. Move each wheel sideways while holding the frame. Play indicates a wheel bearing or a loose axle. Also read fatbike wheel wobbles or has play.
  6. Check with suitable tools whether visible bolts (saddle clamp, handlebar stem, luggage rack, mudguards) are tight. Do not overtighten, especially not on aluminum parts.

When to go to the workshop?

Go to the workshop if you feel play in the cranks, bottom bracket or wheels, if the sound comes from the motor or the wheel, or if you do not lose the sound after tightening everything you can reach. Creaking sounds are difficult to locate: sound travels through a frame, so a creak at the pedals sometimes seems to come from the saddle. In the workshop we systematically check the bike, tighten all bolts and replace what is worn. It is better not to leave a loose crank or a wheel bearing with play for long, because the surrounding part will also become damaged.

Frequently asked questions

Why does my fatbike creak with every pedal stroke?

Usually due to the pedals, a loose crank or a worn bottom bracket. Check if the cranks have play and if the pedals turn smoothly.

My fatbike rattles over cobblestones, what is loose?

Often the chain guard, a mudguard, the luggage rack, the stand, a light or the battery in the holder. Let the bike bounce on its tires and feel which part moves.

Is a creaking fatbike dangerous?

Not always, but a loose crank, play in the bottom bracket or a wheel with play can worsen and become unsafe. Have it checked if you feel play.

How much does it cost to have a creaking bottom bracket replaced?

Replacing a bottom bracket costs €70 as an estimated price incl. installation. Replacing pedals costs €25 and a crankset €50.

Can I fix a creaking sound with oil?

You should lubricate a dry chain, but do not spray oil into bearings, on brakes or on the frame. You solve creaking from the bottom bracket or crank by tightening or replacing.

My battery rattles in the holder, is that bad?

Yes, have it fixed. A battery with play can cause the bike to cut out and damage the contact points. Often the battery lock, the battery holder or the cover is worn.
