Fatbike insurance: mandatory or sensible?

For a standard fatbike that complies with bicycle regulations, insurance is not mandatory. However, it is often a sensible idea, as fatbikes are expensive and popular with thieves.

What insurance options are available?

  • Theft insurance: covers (part of) the value in the event of theft. Pay attention to the requirements for the lock.
  • Comprehensive bicycle insurance: also covers damage to your fatbike caused by a fall or accident.
  • Personal liability insurance (AVP): covers damage you cause to others with your fatbike, as long as the bike is legal.

Be aware of fatbikes that go faster than 25 km/h

If your fatbike goes faster than 25 km/h, it is legally classified as a moped. Your AVP usually covers nothing in this case, and riding without third-party liability insurance is an offence.

Preventing theft

Insurers often have requirements for your lock. A good chain lock, an alarm, and a GPS tracker make it difficult for thieves. View locks and alarms.

Riding a Sache Bikes fatbike legally

All our fatbikes are set up according to Dutch regulations: 250W, assistance up to 25 km/h, and a throttle up to 6 km/h. We do not sell parts to bypass these limits. View our fatbikes or have your bike checked in our workshop: book an appointment.
