Fatbike controller broken? Symptoms, causes and repair

By the Sache Bikes workshop · updated 18-10-2026

You can usually identify a faulty controller by a display that turns on while the motor does nothing, a jerking or stuttering motor, a fault code or a burning smell. But often the battery, a connector or a sensor is the cause first, so check those before you buy a new controller. We can inspect and replace it in The Hague and Zoetermeer, often on the same day.

In short

  • The controller is the brain: it processes signals from the display, pedal sensor, throttle and brake sensors and drives the motor.
  • Typical symptoms: no assistance, jerking, fault code, cut-outs, burning smell or a hot controller.
  • First rule out the battery, connectors, brake sensors and pedal sensor; these are more often the cause.
  • Controllers are not universal: connectors and versions differ per model.
  • Replacing the original controller: estimated price €150 incl. installation, fault investigation €30 (waived if repaired).

Symptoms of a faulty controller

  • The display turns on, but the motor provides no assistance and neither does the throttle (pedal assist).
  • The motor jerks, vibrates, makes a humming sound or runs irregularly.
  • The bike cuts out randomly, even without bumps or rain.
  • A fault code appears indicating a communication or motor fault. First check the display connector, the wiring harness, the pedal sensor and the extension cable of the pedal sensor. Only then is the display or the controller the cause.
  • Burning smell, a melting smell or a controller that feels very hot.

Almost all these symptoms can also have another cause. That is why ruling them out is the most important step.

Most common causes

Moisture and oxidation

The controller is often low on the frame or in a box near the battery. Water from the road, rain or a pressure washer can enter through cable entries. Moisture on the circuit board causes a short circuit or corrosion; this often starts with occasional cut-outs and ends with no assistance at all.

Overload and heat

Long climbs with a lot of weight, or a seized motor, demand a lot of power. The controller gets hot and the components inside can fail. A burning smell is a clear signal: stop riding and have the bike checked.

Short circuit due to a damaged cable

A cable that is worn through at the head tube or rear axle can cause a short circuit that damages the controller. If you only replace the controller, the new one will break again. That is why we always also check the wiring harness.

Wrong or modified controller

A controller that does not fit the motor or the battery, or that has been modified to bypass the speed limit, can overload the motor or itself. Moreover, a bike with such a controller is no longer legally a bike. We only install controllers that fit your model and set them to 25 km/h.

Not the controller, but a sensor or the battery

A brake sensor that stays active, a faulty pedal sensor or a battery that sags under load give almost the same complaints. Does the throttle work but not the pedaling? Then the problem is usually with the pedal sensor; read pedal assistance does not work.

Check yourself: step by step

  1. Battery: charge it fully and check if it is securely attached without play. Check the contacts for dirt or discoloration, but never open the battery.
  2. Connectors: turn off the bike, carefully disconnect the connectors of the motor, display and sensors and reconnect them. Look for bent pins, dirt, water or green corrosion.
  3. Brake sensors: if a brake sensor remains active, the controller switches off the assistance. Disconnect them one by one and try again.
  4. Throttle and pedal sensor: does the pedal assist work via the throttle, but not the pedal assistance? Then the controller is probably fine and the problem is in the pedal sensor or the magnet ring.
  5. Wiring harness: check if the cables are crushed, worn through or cut anywhere, especially at the head tube and at the rear axle.
  6. Fault code: write down or photograph the code. The meaning differs per display; see fatbike display does nothing or gives a fault code.

When to visit the workshop?

If you smell a burning smell or the controller feels hot, do not ride further and have the bike checked. Even if the battery, connectors and sensors seem fine but the motor still does nothing, it is time for the workshop. We measure what goes into the controller and what comes out, so we can be sure whether the controller itself is broken or another component is the cause. This prevents you from buying a controller you did not need. After replacement, we set the controller and the display to the legal 25 km/h and test the bike.

Choosing the right controller

Controllers are not universal. Even for the same bike model, different versions exist, depending on the year of manufacture, the connectors (for example the color of the motor connector) and the cable lengths. Always compare your current controller with the product photos or let us take a look.

Get it done in The Hague or Zoetermeer

In the workshop, we first determine what is actually broken. Then you get a price and you decide.

Repair Estimated price
Investigation costs (waived if repaired) €30
Replace original controller €150
Replace brake sensor €25
Replace pedal sensor €60
Pedal sensor extension cable €45
Replace wiring harness €125
Replace 25 km/h display €75

Estimated prices incl. VAT and installation, excluding any parts unless otherwise stated. The investigation costs of €30 are waived if we perform the repair. If more is needed, we will discuss it first: we never do anything without your approval.

You can find us at Calandkade 44-45, 2521 AA Den Haag (Tuesday to Saturday 10:00-18:00) and at Philipsstraat 3B in Zoetermeer (Monday to Saturday 10:00-18:00). If you bring the bike in the morning and the part is in stock, it is usually ready the same day. We repair all common brands, such as Ouxi, Qmwheel, 7GO, RSE, AGM, Windgoo and Koolux, even if you did not buy the bike from us. Home repair is also possible, excluding travel costs.

Frequently asked questions

How can I be sure that my controller is broken?

Only when the battery, connectors, brake sensors, pedal sensor and wiring harness are fine. In the workshop, we measure the input and output signals of the controller, so you do not buy a new one unnecessarily.

How much does a new controller for a fatbike cost?

Replacing an original controller costs us €150 as an estimated price incl. installation. Fault investigation costs €30 and is waived if we perform the repair.

Can a controller break due to rain?

Yes. Moisture entering through cable entries can cause a short circuit and corrosion. Therefore, do not clean your bike with a pressure washer.

Does every controller fit my fatbike?

No. Versions differ per brand, model and year of manufacture, including connectors and cable lengths. Always compare with the product photos or ask us to take a look.

Can I install a controller without a speed limit?

No. A bike with pedal assistance may assist up to 25 km/h. We set every controller to 25 km/h.

My controller smells burnt, can I still ride?

Better not. Turn off the bike and have it checked. Often there is also an underlying cause, such as a damaged cable, that must be resolved first.
