Lock or holder: what is broken?

On many fatbikes, the lock is in the battery cover. If the lock is broken or the key is lost, we carefully drill out the old cylinder so that the battery is released, and install a new cover with lock and keys. The battery holder is the part in which the battery rests and where the contact points are located. If it is worn out or torn, the battery will have a poor connection. You will notice this as a malfunction: the display flashes or the power assistance cuts out when you hit bumps. In that case, a new lock will not help and the holder needs to be replaced. We always look at both before giving you a price.

How the repair works

1. Schedule an appointment and tell us whether you still have the key or not.
2. We inspect the lock, cover, holder, and contact points.
3. You will be told in advance what is needed and what it will cost.
4. We drill out the old lock without damaging the battery and install the new cover or new holder.
5. We test whether the battery is properly secured, makes contact, and whether the lock opens and closes smoothly.
6. You pick up your fatbike with new keys.

Tips to keep your battery lock in good condition

Never force a stiff lock with pliers: the key will often break off and drilling will become more difficult. Do not use thick oil or grease in the cylinder, as dirt will stick to it; a dry lubricant works better. Do not spray the bike with a high-pressure cleaner, so that no water gets into the lock and contacts. Keep a spare key in a fixed place immediately after purchase. A locked battery is also good protection against theft, because a loose battery can be quickly removed. You can also buy battery locks and battery holders separately in the battery locks collection. If the battery itself has a problem, check battery repair or the batteries collection.

I have lost my battery key. Can you make a new key?

We replace the battery cover with lock (€90 incl. drilling). You will then get a new lock with new keys, so that old or lost keys will no longer fit.

Will my battery be damaged by drilling?

No. We only drill out the cylinder of the lock and work in a way that the battery is not touched.

Can I still use my fatbike if the battery is stuck?

As long as the battery is charged, yes, but charging can be difficult if it cannot be removed and your charger only fits the loose battery. Schedule the repair quickly then.

My battery rattles. Does the lock need to be replaced?

Usually not. Rattling or power failure when hitting bumps is more often caused by a worn battery holder (€85) than the lock.

Can I have a lock from another brand installed?

We install a cover and lock that fit your battery and holder. If in doubt, bring your bike with you, and we will see what fits.

Can the lock still be used after an attempted break-in?

Often the cylinder is damaged, even if it still seems to work. We check it and replace it if necessary. After a collision or break-in, a damage assessment can be useful.
